One of the more popular TV reality shows on prison life is MSNBC's Lockup, which debuted on June 3, 2005. The series has profiled some of the toughest prisons in the United States, including San Quentin, Rikers Island, Folsom State (made famous by a Johnny Cash song), Pelican Bay, Brushy Mountain and Stateville Correctional Facility.

A typical episode generally follows one or two inmates as they experience the full force of prison life. Both male and female inmates are profiled. Lockup is fascinating when one first watches it, but after that it becomes about as dull and routine as prison life itself.

Prison Break is a great TV series that tells about life in prison... and how to escape it. It stars Wentworth Miller who plays as Michael Scofield. Michael intentionally lets himself get caught during a staged bank heist in order to get his brother out of prison. He then should befriend the inmates in order to escape.

The show highlights the ingenuity of Michael as he tries to get out of one tight spot after another. The script is great and the story is gripping. Get a feel of the series by grabbing Prison Break Season 1.
