That's an interesting question. These TV talent search shows are hardly new, dating back to the early days of television – and before that radio. Predecessors of American Idol, et al., include such fare as Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts (1948-58), The Original Amateur Hour (1948-70), The Gong Show (1976-80) and Star Search (1983-95).

My favorite current TV talent search show is probably Project Runway (2004-), hosted by supermodel Heidi Klum. As for talent search oldies, one can always check out The Original Amateur Hour DVD for both laughs and enlightenment, as this series featured a number of performers who later went on to become stars.
